The jobs were at the Buzzard iron ore mine, south of Coober Pedy. On 1 October its contractor told its own staff to stop normal duties and use their annual leave, in what South Australia's mining minister called a dispute about cost. Six days later, the contractor was in administration.

ASIC, the corporate regulator, names the contractor as Agile Mining Services Pty Ltd, company number ACN 640 455 214, which also holds the business name Agile Mining Group. KPMG's Matthew Woods and Timothy Mableson now run it as administrators.

So is Agile Mining in administration? Yes. Is the company that holds the mine? It is not on the notice. The lease, the government grant to mine the site, is held by Central Iron Pty Ltd, which the state's mining department lists as wholly owned by Peak Iron Mines.

That split matters to anyone owed money. The company named on a contract, order or invoice is the starting point for identifying who may be legally responsible for payment. At Peak Iron's other mine, YG Group says, another company bought the trucks.

Who held what at Buzzard

Agile describes itself as the mine operator and main mining contractor at Buzzard: drilling and blasting the rock, loading and hauling it, crushing the ore and managing the project. A 2024 South Australian Premier's Award named it the main contractor at Peak Iron's Peculiar Knob and Buzzard mines. The award said its use of RaptorTech's software, which tracks and manages a mine's trucks and machinery, cut fuel use and emissions by 23%, lifted productivity by 17% and saved $3.6 million in 12 months.

The ground itself is held by someone else. The mining lease, ML 6531, was granted to Central Iron on 19 November 2021 and covers 1,617.99 hectares, about 16 square kilometres. The state's project page names Central Iron as the company and describes an open-cut pit, a crushing plant, maintenance buildings and haul roads.

Peak Iron's own figures give a sense of scale: about 15 million tonnes of ore left in the pit, a stated production rate of 3 million tonnes a year, first ore shipped in July 2025, an operating workforce of about 180 and a camp with beds for 208 workers. YG Group says the group holds the offtake rights for Buzzard, meaning rights to buy the ore the mine produces. Which YG company holds that agreement is not established here.

So three businesses had three different roles. One holds the right to mine the ground. One says it has the right to buy the ore. The one doing the mining work is the one in administration.

Diagram showing Central Iron as the Buzzard mining lease holder, YG Group as claiming ore purchase rights, and Agile Mining Services as the mine operator now in administration.

The public record separates the mining lease, the ore rights and the mining work among different businesses.

At Peak Iron's other mine, another company says it bought the trucks

Agile also worked at Peak Iron's other mine, Peculiar Knob. YG Group's website names Agile Mining Services Pty Ltd as the mining subcontractor there.

YG's company history describes who paid for what. It says a company called Australia Ocean Logistics (AOL), set up as part of YG's own expansion, signed deals with Peak Iron to run the mining and buy the ore at Peculiar Knob, signed the subcontracts for the trucking, rail, port and mining work, and "purchased all necessary mining equipment, including trucks, for its Peculiar Knob operations".

So on YG's account, the company that bought the trucks was not the company that worked them. That account does not show who owns the machines at Buzzard, or whether AOL still owns the Peculiar Knob fleet. It does show why a truck or excavator working on a mine cannot be assumed to belong to the contractor operating it.

Six months earlier, Agile's founder described a cash squeeze

In late March, Agile's founder wrote on LinkedIn: "The last 6 months nearly broke Agile (and me)." He described a commercial dispute that "went sideways", extreme weather that "knocked out" its logistics, payment obligations that "weren't met", and the tightest cash squeeze since the business started in 2020, with 250 people depending on it.

He also wrote that Agile "came out of this stretch intact."

The post does not say who did not pay, or whether that dispute is the one that stopped work at Buzzard. It does show the company had been under financial pressure before.

What the record does not show

The public record does not show which company owes money in the Buzzard dispute or how much, which machines Agile owns, rents or runs for others, whether work at Buzzard has restarted, or why the company went into administration. KPMG has sent creditors a first report, but it is open only to people who declare they are creditors, investors or their advisers, so it is not used here.

Administrators take control of a company and report to its creditors, who later vote on its future: a deal with creditors, liquidation, or handing it back to its directors. The first creditors' meeting is online at 3pm Adelaide time on 19 October. The notice asks creditors to lodge claim forms (proofs of debt) and voting forms (proxies) by 4pm on 16 October.

Where a claim goes

If the name on your contract, order or payslip is Agile Mining Services or Agile Mining Group, it leads to company number ACN 640 455 214, and that company is in voluntary administration. If the name is Central Iron, Peak Iron Mines, YG Group or Australia Ocean Logistics, it is a different company.

ASIC published no insolvency notice between January 2023 and 9 October for Central Iron Pty Ltd (ACN 143 503 397), Peak Iron Mines Pty Ltd (ACN 633 258 590), YG Group Pty Ltd (ACN 659 181 576) or Australia Ocean Logistics Pty Ltd (ACN 626 546 807). That covers those four companies by company number, not every business connected to them.

None of this says what anyone will get back. It does say which company's administrators to contact, and that the right to mine, the right to the ore and the machines on site can each sit with a different company.

The register in 60 seconds

ASIC published notices concerning 103 entities on the day, across 92 notices. 40 are newly published distress entries: a company entering an insolvent process, disclosed in this issue. The remaining 63 are:

  • 5 winding-up applications, which ask a court for an order and are not findings of insolvency

  • 36 procedural filings on cases already open: meetings, dividends, proof deadlines and disclaimers

  • 14 companies already inside a process that moved stage, such as an administration converting to liquidation

  • 8 members' voluntary liquidations, which are solvent and not failures at all

  • 0 vacancies filled, where the process continues with a new practitioner

Treating every entity on the day's register as a new distress event would report 103 where the resolved register supports 40 newly published distress entries.

Newly published distress

The register carried 40 newly published distress entries. Those carrying a former or trading name are listed first. Dates are from the notice.
