Two companies holding Chess Moving's Brisbane and Toowoomba names are in liquidation. Chess's own website names neither.

Booked a move, or put furniture into storage, with Chess Moving in Brisbane or Toowoomba?

Two companies holding those branch names entered creditors' voluntary liquidation on 13 October. Durant Enterprises Pty Ltd (ACN 615 247 311) is the company whose liquidation notice records its trading name as Chess Moving Brisbane. Regional Removals Pty Ltd (ACN 671 808 496) holds the Chess Moving Toowoomba business name. Michael Beck was appointed liquidator of both.

Is Chess Moving in liquidation? Not the brand owner. Chess Moving Australia Pty Ltd (ACN 055 558 837), which owns the Chess Moving trade mark, is not one of the companies in liquidation.

Working out which company you dealt with is harder than the brand suggests. Chess Moving's own website says the Brisbane branch is "owned and run by Durrant Enterprises Pty Ltd", with a double r, and names "Taylors Removals Pty Ltd" for Toowoomba.

Chess Moving Australia owns the CHESS MOVING trade mark, registered in 2016. Its website presents the branches under that one brand and says "the businesses around Australia are operated by the following companies", listing separate companies for Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane, Toowoomba, Canberra, Cairns, Townsville and Melbourne. ASIC published no insolvency notice for Chess Moving Australia between January 2023 and 13 October.

Four companies, all with their main business location in the Brisbane postcode 4108, entered liquidation on 13 October:

In each, the members resolved on 13 October to wind the company up and appointed Michael Beck. ASIC published four separate notices. The public records used here do not show who owns the four companies.

In a creditors' voluntary liquidation, an independent liquidator takes control of the company, works out what it owns and owes, sells what can be sold and pays creditors in the order the law sets. A liquidation appointment is not a finding that a trading name has stopped operating. A brand can continue under a different company.

Chess Moving's Brisbane branch page says the branch is "owned and run by Durrant Enterprises Pty Ltd". Two r's.

A company of that spelling exists. Durrant Enterprises Pty Ltd is a separate company whose ABN has been cancelled since 31 May 2018. The company in liquidation is Durant Enterprises Pty Ltd, with one r.

The branch's own insurance guide points to the company with one r. The guide, which applies from September 2022, names Durant Enterprises, trading as Chess Moving Brisbane, at 114 Balham Road, Archerfield, and prints ABN 74 615 247 311. That ABN contains the ACN of the company now in liquidation. Chess's published Queensland terms and conditions also define "We" as Durant Enterprises.

The website spelling could simply be a typing slip. A creditor who searches the name exactly as printed still lands on the wrong company.

Chess Moving's Toowoomba branch page says the branch is "owned and run by Taylors Removals Pty Ltd".

ASIC's company register, as at 6 October, holds no company of that exact name. The Chess Moving Toowoomba business name has been registered to Regional Removals since 16 February 2024. Its other business name is Taylors Moving & Storage, which its liquidation notice records as its trading name. The nearest similarly named company, Taylors Removals & Storage (QLD) Pty Ltd, has had its ABN cancelled since 9 April 2025.

None of that shows which company operates the Toowoomba branch. It shows why the website alone cannot identify the company behind a Toowoomba contract.

ASIC's business names register lists Chess Moving Brisbane against Durant Enterprises from 15 August 2017, still registered. Since 1 October 2026 it has also listed Chess Moving Brisbane against Chess Moving Australia.

Two live listings for one name is unusual. ASIC's transfer process could explain it: once a holder submits a request to transfer a business name, ASIC says it will cancel that holder's registration within 28 days. The record does not show whether a transfer was requested.

A business name is not a warehouse, a fleet or a customer contract. The record does not show whether staff, bookings, vehicles, debts or goods in storage moved with the Brisbane name.

Customers with a deposit on a future move, goods in storage or an open claim, and suppliers with an unpaid invoice, need the company named on their documents, not the brand. A liquidator deals with the company's own contracts and debts.

If your paperwork says only Chess Moving Brisbane, check the ABN, because that name now has two holders. If it names either company in liquidation, the liquidator is the source on the liquidation and any claim, and the liquidator's contact details are on the ASIC notices linked below.

For anyone who took out transit or storage insurance through the Brisbane branch, the insurance guide describes Durant Enterprises as an authorised representative of Cowden (VIC) Pty Ltd, which holds Australian Financial Services Licence 245658, and states that Cowden is responsible for the financial services Durant Enterprises provides.

The liquidation notices do not establish that any deposit has been lost, that any stored goods are unavailable or that any insurance arrangement has stopped.

None of those answers is in the liquidation notices. The liquidator and Chess Moving Australia are the parties who can answer them.

The Chess Moving name alone does not identify the company behind a Brisbane or Toowoomba booking. The ABN on the paperwork does.
