Is Essential Caravans in administration? Yes. Essential Caravans Pty Ltd, ACN 607 509 884, the Melbourne caravan maker, appointed Paul A. Allen and Glenn J. Franklin of PKF Melbourne as voluntary administrators on 21 October. It is not in liquidation.
It happened in three days. On Monday 19 October, Caravan Camping Sales reported that Essential would close its Somerton factory and move production of its new ranges offshore. On Wednesday 21 October the administrators were appointed. On Thursday 22 October, two other caravan makers put out statements saying they were not affected.
For buyers, the useful detail is in the names. The business name Essential Caravans Melbourne is not registered to the company in administration. It belongs to Touring Hub Australia Pty Ltd, a separate company that registered names for several other caravan brands in the same week. Touring Hub is not named in the notice.
If you paid a deposit or are waiting on a caravan, the company named on your contract and receipt is the one that matters now.

What the administrators say
The administrators were appointed by Essential's director under section 436A of the Corporations Act. In a statement on 22 October, they said the appointment followed an operational restructure that had already been announced.
They said they and management were reviewing every current customer build and delivery schedule. "It is the intention that all current orders will be fulfilled," the statement says.
An intention is not a promise. What happens to each order, deposit and warranty claim will come from the administrators.
The first meeting of creditors is online at 10.30am on 30 October. It considers whether to form a committee of inspection and whether to replace the administrators. Creditors who want to attend must submit a proof of debt, and any proxy, by 4pm on 29 October. A later second meeting decides the company's future: a deed of company arrangement, liquidation or a return to the director.

Four names, four companies
These are the names a buyer could meet, and the company behind each one.

A brand is the name on the caravan. A company is what signs the contract, takes the deposit and can go into administration. One company can sell another company's caravans without being the maker.
Essential Caravans Melbourne belongs to Touring Hub
Touring Hub Australia Pty Ltd was registered in October 2025. On 26 February 2026 it registered the business name Essential Caravans Melbourne.
Between 25 February and 3 March it registered 12 business names in all, including New age Caravans Melbourne, New Age Caravans Geelong, Concept Caravans Melbourne, Polaris Hume, Urban Caravans Melbourne and The Touring Hub.
The Melbourne name had been used before. A business name Essential Caravans Melbourne was registered in August 2023 and cancelled on 21 December 2025, about two months before Touring Hub registered it.
Holding a business name is not the same as running the business behind it, and nothing here suggests Touring Hub is in any difficulty.
The practical point is simple. The sign, the brochure and the badge may all say Essential, while the sales agreement names a different company. The legal name and ACN on your contract, invoice and receipt show who took your money and who promised delivery.

Zone RV changed hands in March
Zone RV, the Sunshine Coast off-road caravan maker, came before Essential. Zone RV Holdings Pty Ltd and Zone Manufacturing Pty Ltd went into administration on 1 December 2025 and into liquidation on 15 January 2026.
The liquidators, Cor Cordis, sold the business to Adventure Zone RV Pty Ltd. They describe the buyer as "a company associated with" Essential's owner, and say the sale was completed with effect from 13 March 2026. The price was payable in two parts, and about $3.4 million of employee claims was to be settled from it.
Adventure Zone RV now owns the Zone RV, Summit Series and Expedition Series trade marks.
On 22 October, Zone RV published its own statement. It says Adventure Zone RV is owned by seven shareholders, including its two directors, and that neither director holds any role at Essential. It also says the person who led the purchase owns Essential. Zone RV says it has built and delivered more than 90 vans and is taking orders as normal.
Adventure Zone RV is not named in Essential's notice. Older Zone RV caravans were sold by the former companies, which are in liquidation, and the liquidators' announcement does not set out which of their obligations, if any, went with the sale.
Design RV says it is unaffected
Design RV Pty Ltd builds caravans at its factory in Pakenham, south-east of Melbourne. In its own statement on 22 October, it said its operations "remain unaffected and fully operational", with supplier agreements and contracts still active, and pointed to a new Australian-made full composite range.
Caravan Camping Sales reports that Essential's owner has a stake in Design RV. Design RV is not named in Essential's notice.
The move offshore came first
Essential's website says it has built more than 5,000 caravans since 2015, at its Somerton factory in Melbourne's north since November 2021.
The 19 October report said the Somerton factory would close and the new line-up would be cut from five ranges to two imported full composite ranges, Cruiser and Ranger. It listed the cheapest Cruiser at $67,990 and a 22-foot Ranger at $107,990.
The administrators have not said what led to the appointment.
If you are waiting on a caravan
Find the legal company name and ACN on your sales agreement, invoice and each payment receipt. Keep copies of everything.
If your contract is with Essential Caravans Pty Ltd, the administrators' review of builds and delivery schedules is the process that covers your order, and PKF Melbourne is the contact.
If you already own a caravan, the ACCC says consumer guarantee rights are separate from any manufacturer's warranty, and buyers should ask "the business they bought the caravan from" for a remedy. That supplier is usually the dealership.
If you are a supplier, check which company your invoices were issued to before you lodge anything.
What is still unknown
The administrators have not yet said which orders will be completed, what happens to deposits and part-built caravans, or how warranty claims will be handled. The notice does not say what contracts link Essential to the dealers that sell its caravans. The second meeting will decide the company's future.
The badge says Essential. The contract may name someone else, and that is the company to ask about.
